How often is a mortgage or debt consolidation service actually a scam?

Is it common to make mortgage application on the phone? Is it a good idea?
How about making an online application? Do people easily give out SSN and all other private info?

Are there mortgage services in most cities, say with population over 20.000?

Do local mortgage businesses or their agents usually serve a city or a county or state/province.

Is it legal to offer listings for mortgage services? Never seen such a thing.

As far as doing the application process over the phone or whatnot, I would only do as much as you are comfortable with. As for me, I would much rather be face to face with someone. Agents are usually pretty available within a decent radius of almost anywhere.

I'm sure plenty of people have had success doing applications over the phone, but if you are going to do that, make sure you have done a little homework on the company and have found them to be respectable and reputable.

Well, mortgages and debt consolidation services are two VERY different things, so your post is a little unclear.

I know my mortgage broker through a referral. I doubt I would respond to an ad or a cold call.

As for debt consolidation, that is one of the worst things you can do to your credit. Stay away!
