Post $500,000 Homes Hard To Find In Denver

Half a million dollars can buy different types of home depending on what part of Denver in which people are looking to live. CBS4 headed out with Michael Craig, a local real estate agent to find out what's available for $500,000.

Washington Park, one of the hottest neighborhoods in Denver, was the first stop on the tour.

"You can leave here early in the morning and go for a run in the park," Craig said.

One 4 bedroom, 2 bath bungalow had a lot of charm but was only 1,600 square feet, including a finished basement.

"There's just not a lot of closet space," Craig said. "You just have to rotate your clothing seasonally."

The half million dollar payment will get people a renovated house with several upgrades.

"Typically you'll get an all new kitchen with the cherry cabinets, the granite counter tops, stainless appliances, a new vanity and new commode," Craig said.

While $500,000 gets people charm in Washington Park, it can buy more space in a place like Stapleton.

For the same price, people can get a house with 3 bedrooms, 2 baths and 3,100 square feet including an unfinished basement.

"Much larger bedroom than you'll get in the Washington Park Bungalow," Craig said. "A full bathtub, a shower, a double sink and walk in closet."

The disadvantage is the Stapleton homes are further from downtown and don't have the same picturesque yards. Instead, people get a dirt lot on purchase along with maybe one tree.

"Normally you don't get anything in a backyard in a new construction," Craig said. "It's yours, you don't even get a fence typically."

A typical $500,000 house in Stapleton does come with a 2 car attached garage.
