Lightbulb Sellers of Portland-area houses and condos have enjoyed more leverage

Real estate agent Holly Stone spent several months scouting Portland's condominium market for half a dozen clients, watching and waiting for the right unit in the trendiest buildings.

She spent Thursday evening at a reception that provided the first peek at floor plans and prices for The Metropolitan, a much-anticipated 19-story tower on tap to become the tallest in the Pearl District.

But Stone's research on the building won't help her clients reach the front of the line when it's time to pick units. Hoyt Realty Group, which is conducting the sale, asked prospective buyers to sign up for a lottery that would decide -- at random -- the selection order. The signup period began at Thursday's reception and continues through 5 p.m. today.
